5 Signs of a Leader

By Shannon O'Dell / Posted on 26 October 2009

queen_bee_04There are so many people I have listened to that are “professional skeptics” regarding the church. They are 2 Timothy 3:7 -”always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth.” So many church leaders are full time students of theory and part time leaders in application. In my short few years of pastoring I am learning that there are clear signs they have it and they do not.

#5 Networker – constantly learning and celebrating other leaders ministry. Leaders that have a broad spectrum of influencers in their lives are leaders!

#4 Risk Taker – Those closest to them are challenging them to the next level and the leader is ready for the risk…may even think they can do better than it’s ever been done. “Our greatest limitation…is our low expectation.”

#3 Extractor – Leaders can bring out leadership within those closest to them! All of us have God-given gifts and talents within us and leaders can draw them out!

#2 Stick “With-it-ness” – is the clear sign of  a leader…STAY, STICK WITH IT, STAND…even when the tough times hit you and your ministry, mission, vocation or family.

#1 Magnetic – Leaders create a following…it begins in the home, then at school or work, and then within your community. Position is not a magnet, but leadership is magnetic!

Are you a leader? I am begging God to grow me in all of these of areas as I lead His church.

  3. Thanks for this list Shannon. Very succinct and to the point. As I read it I was stopped by #2. That is the season I am in right now. Part of me also wants to avoid the negatives on each of those as well.

Great post! This is going to be part of my daily prayer – to make me a better leader, and less of an average part of the crowd. While I have some of the qualities (stick-with-it-ness and networking,) there are some very important, and influential, characteristics I ought to adhere to.
