Preach This to Your Family/Church/Employees

By Shannon O'Dell / Posted on 20 April 2009

excusesI think the message of health needs to be preached…I have never heard a message on it till this weekend. Check out the notes and let me know what you think…you can watch it on the front page of http://brandnewchurch.com.

Excuses
10) I hate to exercise!
9) I try but know I will quit.
8 ) Can’t afford the gym membership.
7) Done it before but it really didn’t help any.
6) Don’t know how.
5) No child care…have to take care of my family.
4) No one to motivate me.
3) Hurts to much.
2) I will tomorrow.
1) I don’t have time.

The real excuse…
Because we don’t associate our body as an issue of obedience to God!
This is big in God’s plan!
Not Cosmo, Vanity Fair, Prevention, Muscle Fitness, GQ, Women’s Health
We cannot be ashamed to talk about what God took time to create.
Our physical appearance can be a blind spot spiritually.
You need to know:
God created it!
Genesis 2:7, “the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.”
Psalm 139:13-14, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
Jesus wore one.
John 1:14, “The word, (that’s Jesus) became flesh and made his dwelling among us.”
God lives in it!
1 Corinthians 6:19-20, “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.”
Before Jesus rose again where was His spirit…in the House.
Now his is in your house!
Jesus doesn’t just spend two or three hours with you, He has taken up residence!
Your Savior lives in you!!
This is why it is important to stay pure students and singles…don’t involve God in it
Why is God concerned about your body? It’s his house!!
You take care of your home…flowers, paint, payment, curb appeal…
Our Bodies bring Him worship.
What will our bodies look like in heaven? Don’t know, but we are created in His Image.
1 Corinthians 15:40, “There are also heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is another
Our earthly body has brilliance and radiance.
Romans 12:1, “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.”
The Church is a Body
1 Corinthians 12:27 “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.”
We are His body today and the lost are sensitive to the appearance of The Body.
Represent Him Well.

How do we stop making excuses and worship God with our body:
Discipline
2 Timothy 1:7 “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.”
Discipline spawns new disciplines!!
1 Cor. 9:27 “No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.”
DISCIPLE-line…being a disciple of Christ equals discipline!
Self Control
Saying no to addictions
Don’t let God’s house be controlled by anything.
2 Pet. 2:19 “for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him.”
Remove Your Idolatry
EX. 20:3 “You shall have no other God’s before me.”
Food has become your idol…say no!
Exercise and Eat Right
Diets are great, but they will not replace a lifestyle of worship…
Being skinny does not mean you are healthy.
Join a gym…or get healthy at home with accountability

Your body healthy:
1) Brings God glory
2) Allow your mission for Him to last longer
3) Tells a lost world that you are disciplined
4) Helps your intimacy in marriage
5) Helps your work ethic and habits

God made whole grains, not bleached white flour. (Did you know that if you sprinkle bleached enriched flour on your vegetable garden it keeps most of the bugs out? They know its poison) The original food for man was fruit and vegetables. And range-fed meat and poultry is far healthier for you than that raised in feedlots and poultry houses.

God is doing such amazing work through you and BNC, Shannon!! You are not only speaking truth with love on this subject, but filling the gap and stepping up to the plate where “the church of America” has failed once more!
I Thes. 5:23- “May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your WHOLE spirit, soul, and BODY be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
I found this verse, which I have read several times, to have a entire new meaning now.
I had worked out, tanned, etc. to get in shape for my wedding 16 years ago– but it was out of sheer vanity at the time as a nonbeliever.
NOW, it means (for me) to be at the very BEST and to be good stewards of the things-including the bodies God blessed us with and prepare for the wedding of us and Our Groom!

  4. John says,

Shannon said “we don’t associate our body as an issue of obedience to God!”
Shannon if you were being obedient to GOD, you would be listening to what he wants you to preach about and not asking the “audience” what they want to hear. Growth in churches today is not because of being hungry for GOD but being able to listen to what they want and not what GOD wants them to hear. Stop asking your “audience” and ask GOD, start being a GODLY pastor and not worldly pastor.

      John,
With all due respect the only time I have ever been asked what I’d like to hear preached about is “Where in the Word”, ya know that is always awesome because sometimes my kids have questions that I’m not sure how to answer on their level,or how God may want me to lead as a parent or be as a wife, these messages are always very informative and enjoyable, and can also be VERY convicting. (Which if God isn’t convicting me or speaking to me in a service, I know that I need to be searching my soul, because God always has something to show me).
It has been my experience, also, that when your a child of God and your open to “hearing” God’s Word, He is going to speak to you no matter what the topic of the message is. I have learned more in the last year as a christian, than I have the other 35+ years of being in church.

    John,
Just logged on brandnewchurch.com to listen to the message from last weekend (04-18 & 04-19), the message was on taking care of our bodies. This blog wasn’t written until 04-20. It looks like Shannon wasn’t asking his “audience” what they wanted to hear, he had already taught on the subject. The blog was written with the points from the message.
I’m not sure if you have ever attended one of our services live or online and had the chance to listen to Shannon preach. He preaches God’s word week in and week out. I am almost certain you would see that he is a Godly pastor with a hunger and desire to reach our community, our country, and our world for Christ.
If you haven’t attended and don’t have a church home, I’d like to invite you to come out this weekend and worship with us. We have several options to attend either in person or via our icampus online. Check out brandnewchurch.com for times and locations.

    • John says,

Dear Nathan, oh dear Nathan, I did not say he ask for every message, and about Shanon preaching week in and week out, yes he does. But just look at what he preaches on, money, sex, marriage, taking care of our bodies. I have not heard him preach on real word of GOD, like what Jesus told his disciples to do. It as not on money only, sex only, marriage etc… Jesus said to let people know who GOD is, and how much GOD loves you. The I hear Shannon preach a real sermon on God’s Word, then I will know that he is getting his word for GOD. Where in God’s Word does it say to put on a show for people, he did not. When the WORD talks about light, it is not light that BNC flashes around in the building. God said light the world see the light in you which is talking about Jesus, not a 1000 watt strobe light. Jesus out shines BNC lights and that is why prople are seeing the real truth about Shannon.

  6. John says,

    John 1:9
That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

    John 3:19
And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

    Matthew 7:15
Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

    Acts 20:29
For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.

    1 John 4:1
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

  7. Nathan says,

    1 John 4:20-21
20 If someone says, “I love God,” but hates a Christian brother or sister,[c] that person is a liar; for if we don’t love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see? 21 And he has given us this command: Those who love God must also love their Christian brothers and sisters

    1 John 3:15
15Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life in him.

    Psalms 133:1
1 How wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony

    John 17:21-23
21 I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.22 “I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one. 23 I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me.

    Romans 15:5-7
5 May God, who gives this patience and encouragement, help you live in complete harmony with each other, as is fitting for followers of Christ Jesus. 6 Then all of you can join together with one voice, giving praise and glory to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 7 Therefore, accept each other just as Christ has accepted you so that God will be given glory.

    2 Timothy 2:23-24
23 Again I say, don’t get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights. 24 A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people.

wow, my last post ended up being longer than i meant for it to be. after reading 2 timothy 2:23-24, this will be my last post on this blog.

    john,
i understand you don’t agree with some of the things shannon and bnc does to reach the lost and that is fine. i’m sure if i attended your church i could find something i didn’t like about it. but it isn’t about you and i, it’s about reaching the lost. can you imagine only having one style of restaurant in town? people like different things to eat. it’s the same way with churches, god is and will continue to use all different kinds to reach the lost.

    • John says,

Nathan it also is said in God’s Word that all true Christians come together, not like Shannon, having to do with the curtain ones that he wants. None of his choices are from around here, it is like telling this rural area that it is dead to him (Shannon). The one thing I have noticed most is that Shannon has nothing to do with churches in, South Lead Hill, Lead Hill, Diamond City, Peel, Lakeway, Welcome Ridge and the list goes on. What is that telling people about Shannon. It tells me and others that he is to self centered. I am not saying all who attend BNC are like Shannon, I have talked to many that go there and LOVE to work with other churches with things, but some like to follow Shannon and not have anything to do with others that do not attend BNC, they always like it you want to talk to me come to BNC, and then some want even talk to you then. I have talked to Shannon about many things and he tells me that ain’t true or that is not BNC is doing or that is not what I tell them. Shannon told me that he calls the congregation an audience because that is what they are. Look up what the definition of (congregation an audience), audience is about a show, congregation is about worship. Now tell me what you are there for, to Worship or to attend a show which is what some leaders (pastors) calls it. No where in God’s Word does it say anything about putting on a show. No where in God’s Word does it say anything about getting to people with any means. It tells us to go out all tell all the world about who GOD is, not constantly tell about numbers, numbers, numbers, this is how many BNC had attend today or this is how many we baptised this month. Baptism in water does not send you to Heaven, a true personal relationship with Jesus and being baptised in the Holy Spirit not water.
Show me in the God’s Word where it tells if you are baptised in water that you are saved and going to Heaven. Post it please, please, please.

      • Well I’m certainly not going to fight. John, I respect your opinion. I don’t agree with it, but I respect it. If someone has a person grudge against another person, do you suppose it is best address it publicly so that in your attempt to make one person look bad, you end up just make yourself look bad, or to take it up with them on a personal level. In the next couple of days, today’s service will be posted on http://www.brandnewchurch.com – it’s about relationships. I encourage you to watch it.

During every baptism that I have witnessed at BNC, the words “In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit” have been included just moments before the individual is baptized in water – a practice that has been around longer than my great, great, great, great, great grandfather. Some churches choose to baptize in a larger body of water such as a river or lake, and some use what is called a baptistery. I am by no means an expert of religious practices, but the only denomination that believes in Jesus Christ and that he is Lord that I personally know of, that does not completely submerge the person being baptized is the Catholic Church.

I believe the numbers that you are talking about are the numbers of people we have in attendance, the number of people being saved, the number of baptisms, and similar numbers. Those are the numbers that church members all over love to hear. It’s not just BNC that is concerned with numbers. I have personally never been to a church other than BNC that doesn’t have, posted somewhere on the wall, last week’s “numbers” – people in attendance and tithes. I don’t think anyone that regularly attends BNC is discouraged about hearing the “numbers” from last week. It’s a proven fact that people respond better to numbers. If your employer came to you and said “I’ve got to cut your pay back some” and doesn’t give you a number, will you be concerned? If the government is going to give out another stimulus, would you be ok with it if they just said “oh, we’re gonna give out some money.” Whether you admit it or not, you want to hear the numbers, too.

I’m not even going to touch on the comment about whether or not people are there for the show or to worship. My advise is this: Next time you want to believe what someone tells you without having the willingness or the desire to check it out for yourself… don’t. :)

John – I sincerely would like to invite you to come by and check out a couple of our services. I’d love to sit with you and worship the King with you. I believe that by attending a few services at BNC would squash most all of the rumors floating around. Please consider it.

  9. John says,

    to Derek Simpkins,
I have attended BNC more than once. I am not saying anything that I have not seen or heard for myself from Shannon or Bruce. Telling to check it out first hand is not what I have to do since I already and checked it out. Believe me, if I say something that I have not read, seen or heard myself from BNC than may GOD strike me down right here and now.

  10. Sherry T says,

John, you mentioned that Shannon has nothing to do with churches in Lead Hill, Peel, etc, etc.
Several weeks ago written invitations went out to churches in northern Arkansas and southern Missouri in an effort to unite small and large churches in Christ. They were invited to attend a conference to learn and grow and get to know one another and how “we” as a Christian body can work together to reach the lost. Telephone invitations were made after the written invitations, and I know because I made the calls. So don’t tell the lie that Shannon has nothing to do with these small churches.
