In Rural America delegation is a must!! Hiring staff is not always an option, so at Brand New Church delegating leadership has to happen. Knowing when to delegate is a sensitive and spirit filled decision. Here are some suggestions to get started in delegation:
1) Make a list for 2 weeks of what you do.
So many employees struggling knowing what they do day in and day out.
2) Identify “priority tasks” that can be delegated. Please note there is a big difference between busy work and worthy work.
A great leader or volunteer will not stay with you when busy work is assigned regularly.
3) Pray and pray more about who!
You need a loyal leader that can handle the pressure. Do not approach them with a job to take stuff off your plate, but with the opportunity to make a difference. People everywhere want to make a difference!
4) Pray more and do not always publicize.
Some of the most willing are not always the most qualified. Some of your best will need to be approached by you, not by approaching you.
5) Be specific.
Have the assignment clear, concise and calendared. Make certain they are clear about deadlines (I struggle with this).
6) Empower the person.
Give them the authority to do the job! Let them in on decisions and direction of the task. They need ownership.
7) Give them an OUT!
Determine a review date so they can get out or you can graciously let them out. This is IMPORTANT!
8 ) Maintain accountability and communication.
If they are not accountable and contacted regularly they will fade. Love them enough to encourage and support them in the task.
9) Gratitude!!
Be grateful…thank you notes, calls, public celebration.
10) TAKE NOTE:
You might be training a future staff member. You are also shaping character in his or her life.

I believe delegation would be a tough one… there’s that fine line between delegating and over-delegating… some delegate because they see opportunity for growth and passion, while others delegate just so they don’t have to carry such a load. From what I can see, you do great with this, and so does the staff @ BNC. I agree that once someone has been delegated to do a task, whether it be short-term or long, it’s great to continue to actively support the person taking on the task – whether it be verbal, physical, or technical. I don’t think recognition is quite as important as the support is, but it’s still important enough to where a person notices it when it’s not there. However, for someone that tends to be a bit on the humble side, a little recognition and celebration goes a long way. More importantly than the recognition, though, I would think, is appreciation. BNC is the world’s best at showing appreciation of those who serve. Without it, I think people become discouraged and/or disgruntled where their task is concerned, which could easily lead to people getting burned out. At that point, the burn out of one person, can result in a domino effect of people losing patience or passion. I also believe that it’s very important to delegate the appropriate person for a task… if they don’t like it or whole-heartedly want to do it, they don’t need to. The greatest success will most always come from a place or person where there is a burning passion for the task at hand. Once they become comfortable in that area, they will usually grow or expand in their service. All-in-all, I think you’re right on the money on this one.
