This is super advice Shannon. I only wish I had heard this when I just starting out and not 35 years later. I would change a lot of what I conducted my counseling, visitation, involving my wife, etc. I do hope a flock of younger pastors reads this now and makes this a goal in their ministry…early on.

Super, Shannon! Super, Rick Warren. I’ve been thinking a lot about the fact that our true home is heaven, right? And in heaven we’re married to Jesus, and not our spouse, right? So then what’s the big deal about having a great marriage for this short little blip of our lives, if it doesn’t make it into heaven? Therein is the big mystery — apparently this is a HUGE deal to God, and somehow we’ve got to figure out how to make this marriage relationship a top priority, and not “I’ll get to it when I have time.” The enemy is on the attack, and just loves to see two believers split apart, be distant, or just “exist” but not thrive — especially leaders, as is referenced here. I recommend “Hedges” by Jerry Jenkins as a great pro-active book to protect your marriage.
