Leadership Aim

By Shannon O'Dell / Posted on 09 July 2010

Lead 1At Brand New Church we just brought on 15 new staff positions. We have also started a Campus Pastor Institute to train and develop ministers to reach rural America (if you are interested in learning more about the institute leave your email in the comment section). Here is the aim and goal I have asked of these leaders…

(1) Loyalty
“Devoted to people at all costs … Do not demand loyalty from them, give them loyalty…it will return!
(2) Courage
(3) Intensity

No doggy downers at BNC! Energy and Christ Like Attitude!
(4) Empathy
“What people feel … ability to appreciate and understand the feelings of the people around you.”
I am growing in this…it’s not natural…it’s supernatural!
(5) Anticipation
(6) Competitiveness
(7) Accountability
(8) Credibility
(9) Tenacity
(10) Dependability

Be on time! Nothing says, “I am more important than you” than being late!
(11) Self-discipline
“Ordering your life to get the main things done.”
(12) Vision
“Keep people apprised of the big picture.”
The vision is…Reach The Last, The Lost, The Least
(13) Sacrifice
“Let somebody else take the credit.”
(14) Intolerant
Be intolerant “of anything that threatens the ministry [which probably includes criticism] … anything that threatens to cause … disunity.”
(15) Negotiation Skills
(16) Able to Delegate
(17) Don’t Deny Defeat/Rebound

Acknowledge bad decisions and make new ones.
Don’t Task Mask…just be honest and regroup.
(18) Teachability
When you stop learning, you stop leading…
(19) Humility
God pours out His favor on those who are humble.

  4. Mr. O’Dell, I really appreciate your focus on rural America. I understand you will be doing a phone conference with us in the Fall, with our director of Heartland Resources, Dave Kennedy. My name is Scott Townsend and I am the director of Distance Education here at Trinity Bible College. The A/G has named us the college of the Heartland, rural America. I noticed you are starting an institute for Campus Pastors to reach rural America. We recently added a scholarship for Bible Institutes, students can receive $150 off per credit of four classes that are chosen per term. I would love to connect with you on this and find out how Trinity Distance Education and be part of your vision to reach rural America. God bless.

  5. I really like this, and often struggle with these attributes in leadership where I serve. I pastor at a church in rural Oologah, OK, and my story very much parallels your book. I am very interested in getting involved and learning about the Campus Pastor Institute.

    Thanks

Shannon – I know your passion for marriage and children…it’s amazing to me how God lines these things up for us, because every leadership aim you outline should also be our spousal and parental aims.

  13. Danny says,

A member of your church mailed me your book, and God has used it and is using it in my life. I am 31 years old, been senior pastor for 1 year of a small church but the dreams are big and from God. Your book has been a tool for God showing ways to achieve His desires for our area. Thank you for that. I am interested in this campus pastor institute if it is availible as a on line or across the distances sort of thing.
