Satellite Larger than the Main Location?

By Shannon O'Dell / Posted on 27 April 2010

multi-siteI have been told that a satellite location will never grow larger that it’s main campus.  When people share this, I always ask why and the same few reasons are shared…
#1 People want “their” preacher to be in person.
#2 Members will get tired of watching it on a screen.
#3 Leaders can’t be developed in multi-site setting.
#4 They are impersonal.

What we are finding here at Brand New Church is that in a few short months we could have a location with weekly attendance exceeding our Main Location! Why?
#1 Campus Pastor has the vision and is an extension of the senior pastor.
#2 Community is a non-negotiable.
#3 Attention to every technological detail.
#4 Children and Students are a non-negotiable.
#5 Each week is a “live” experience, not last weeks’ message from the Main Campus.
#6 Volunteers are the real reason and the greatest influence for church growth.
#7 Each location is on the drawing board for every weekend experience, adding value and ideas.
#8 They know the difference between “need to have” and “want to have”.

Just last week one of our Satellite Locations exceeded our Main Location’s mid-week attendance. If you believe in your vision, equip your satellite locations with the tools to exceed your Main Campus.

FACTS:
-iCampus is our most financially solvent campus!
-Our location furthest from our Main location is growing the fastest.
-When visiting our Satellites most say they like me on screen better.
-Satellite is not as expensive as everyone says it is ($365 a week).
-Campus Pastors will and do become shepherds to their location.
-If “churched” individuals are your main target group your multi-site vision will suffer.
-BNC Remote strategy worked!!

Give me your feedback and opinion! Can a Satellite outgrow a Main Location?

  1. I firmly believe any campus has potential to outgrow a church’s main campus. I think that geographic location can potentially limit the number of physical attendees, but as we’ve already seen, When God’s in it, it doesn’t matter where you’re located! People will show up. Some of the people that have a “Pastor on a screen” have become some of the most faithful, passionate members I’ve seen. And the numbers tend to speak out.

I have been to the satallite location in fayetteville and was very nice. I do however, like to go where my pastor is there in person. Just my opinion.

I like how you stated community is a non-negotiable at this campus. Such an important part of any ministry, campus, church, etc.

That’s why I am so glad that our vision literally is “One Church….many Locations!”. Regardless of what campus you attend, God is there and He is drawing His people to a new wave! Thank You Jesus!
