My Favorite Holiday

By Shannon O'Dell / Posted on 22 November 2011

In November 1621, after the Pilgrim’s first corn harvest proved successful, Governor William Bradford organized a celebratory feast and invited a group of the fledgling colony’s Native American allies, including the Wampanoag chief Massasoit. Now remembered as American’s “first Thanksgiving”—the festival lasted for three days. While no record exists of the historic banquet’s exact menu, the Pilgrim Chronicler Edward Winslow wrote in his journal that Governor Bradford sent four men on a “fowling” mission in preparation for the event, and that the Wampanoag guests arrived bearing five deer.

This is by far my favorite “American” holiday…football, family, and feasting! The purpose though is really about sharing “your harvest” with someone else. I just had to thank God for Brand New Church giving thousands of dollars and hundreds of birds to the less fortunate.

They ran, delivered, and blessed so many that God loves so very much. John the Baptist reminds us that salvation is this…”Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.” Yesterday, I watched little kids rush in with mom, or dad, for their bag of food. Then, back to the car that barely started, or on the sidewalk back home.

Thursday, share with a neighbor, friend, church that is in need. It’s ThanksGIVING! Once again, THANK YOU Brand New Church!

Do you have something to say?
